About Us
Brainerd Public Utilities is proud to share the results of water monitoring conducted from January 1 to December 31, 2016. This report aims to enhance residents' understanding of tap water quality and highlight the importance of protecting our valuable water resources.
Our consistent objective is to deliver safe, reliable drinking water to our customers. Brainerd Public Utilities sources water from groundwater reserves through six wells ranging from 120 to 187 feet deep, drawing from the quaternary water table aquifer.
While our supplied water meets all drinking water standards, the Minnesota Department of Health has assessed how vulnerable our water source might be to potential contamination. For complete details about your water source assessment, please call (651) 201-4700 or 1(800) 818-9318 (press 5) during regular business hours. You can also view this information online at www.health.state.mn.us/divs/eh/water/swap/swa.
For questions about Brainerd's municipal water or information about opportunities for public participation in decisions affecting water quality, please contact us at (218) 829-2193.

Brainerd Drinking Water Company and EPABrainerd Municipal Water Report Background
The Brainerd area was formerly a dense pine forest that served as hunting grounds and blueberry fields for the Chippewa Indians. The region was first discovered by European settlers on Christmas Day, 1805, when US Army Lieutenant Zebulon Pike camped in the area while exploring the Mississippi River's source.
Early settlers originally wanted to name the area "Ocamacua," an Indian word meaning "The Crossing." On September 19, 1871, the town plat was signed and officially filed for record in Crow Wing County on September 25, 1871, under the name "Brainerd." The city was later incorporated on November 19, 1881.
The town's central square, measuring two blocks long on each side, was designated "Gregory Square" after John Gregory Smith, the railroad company president. Since Mr. Smith objected to naming the town "Smithville" or "Smithton," his wife's maiden name—Anne Eliza Brainerd Smith—was chosen for the town, while Mr. Smith's middle name was selected for the square.
The historic water tower, a landmark of engineering significance, was constructed in less than a year, with the entire city irrigation system built over four years (1919-1922). This tower was the first all-concrete elevated tank used by a municipality in the United States, holding 300,000 gallons of water from three wells until 1958, when a newer 1 million gallon tower replaced it. The historic tower was added to the State Inventory of Historic Sites in 1972.
