Texas Water Utility Companies

In partnership with Brown County Water Enhancement District, the City of Brownwood has delivered clean water to our community since the early 1900s. Our commitment ensures that water quality consistently exceeds the strict standards established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and TCEQ.

This Consumer Confidence Report outlines water quality for Brownwood during 2017. We purchase treated water from Brown County Water Enhancement District #1, sourced from Lake Brownwood and Pecan Bayou. The TCEQ has completed a Source Water Assessment for all drinking water systems with their own sources, explaining potential contamination risks based on human activities and natural conditions.

Our water distribution network includes over 150 miles of water mains and four storage tanks with 5 million gallon capacity. We continuously improve our infrastructure to deliver a quality product with exceptional service. Daily disinfectant residual tests and monthly flushing of dead-end mains help maintain excellent water quality.

The City of Brownwood maintains a Superior Water System rating in Texas. In our water loss audit for January-December 2017, we reported an estimated loss of 1,635,325 gallons. For questions about this audit, please call (325) 646-6000.

When municipal water meets federal standards, there may be no health advantages to purchasing bottled water or point-of-use devices. All water sources, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive material, and can collect substances from animal presence or human activity.

For more information about your municipal water and opportunities to get involved, please contact the Utility Division at (325) 646-6000 between 8am-5pm or write to P.O. Box 1389, Brownwood, TX 76804. You're also welcome to attend City Council meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 9:00am at City Hall, 501 Center Street (www.brownwoodtexas.gov).

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Immunocompromised persons, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, those on steroid treatment, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly individuals, and infants may face higher infection risks. These individuals should seek advice about drinking water from their healthcare providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risks are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Several constituents commonly found in municipal water (like calcium, sodium, or iron) can affect taste, color, and odor. These secondary constituents are regulated by Texas rather than the EPA and don't pose health concerns, so they aren't required to be reported here, though they may significantly impact water aesthetics.
