About Us
This statement is based on assessments performed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) on the finished water produced by Manhattan's Water Treatment Facility. Unless noted otherwise, the data represents tests conducted between January 1 and December 31, 2017.
Of the 87 contaminants regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), only fourteen (14) were detected in compliance monitoring samples. Two of these detected contaminants (chloramines and fluoride) are actually added during the treatment process to enhance water quality. All detected substances measured below the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL).
The following tables list each substance's name, unit, MCLs, detection level, and Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG). We've included all regulated and some unregulated contaminants that were found, even in minimal traces. The footnotes explain our findings and provide a key to measurement units.
MCL is defined as "the highest permitted level of a contaminant in municipal water." MCLG represents "the contaminant level in water below which no known or anticipated health risks exist." MCLs are set as close to MCLGs as feasible, allowing for a safety margin.
The City of Manhattan wants residents to know that long before lead contamination made headlines, we implemented protective measures against lead risks in our water system. Due to historically low lead and copper levels, KDHE recommended Manhattan move to a triannual monitoring schedule. In 2017, with homeowners' assistance, thirty samples were collected for lead and copper analysis, confirming our levels remain among the lowest compared to similar Kansas communities.

The EPA sets regulatory standards for municipal water systems nationwide. These standards establish the maximum allowable levels for various contaminants to ensure water safety. Manhattan's water supply is regularly tested to verify compliance with these standards.
Water quality reports provide transparency about what's in your tap water, how it's treated, and whether it meets health guidelines. These reports help residents make informed decisions about their water consumption and household filtration needs.
