City of Port Huron

In compliance with Federal regulations established in 1998, the City of Port Huron proudly presents this annual water quality report to our consumers. Our mission is to deliver safe, reliable drinking water to our community, and this report confirms we're achieving this goal.

The City of Port Huron routinely monitors your water following Federal and state guidelines. The data in this report covers January 1 through December 31, 2017, unless otherwise noted. All test results demonstrate that our water meets or exceeds all Federal and State requirements.

Water Source Information:
Since 1873, Port Huron's water has been drawn from the St. Clair River—a surface water supply rather than groundwater. Today, raw water is collected through two 36-inch-diameter intake pipes. After treatment, water enters a distribution network comprising approximately 170 miles of water mains and about 1,400 fire hydrants. The system serves Port Huron and the townships of Port Huron, Fort Gratiot, Kimball, and Clyde, reaching approximately 60,000 customers with a total storage capacity of 8,250,000 gallons.

Source Water Assessment:
A state assessment conducted in 2005 determined our source water's susceptibility to contamination. On a six-tiered scale from 'very low' to 'high', our source was rated 'highly susceptible' based on geological factors, water chemistry, and potential contamination sources in the area. Health and Safety Information:
All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of certain contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.

Water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activities. Potential contaminants include:

• Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from natural sources, urban runoff, industrial discharges, or farming
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture and residential uses
• Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or mining/petroleum production
• Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, or septic systems

To ensure tap water safety, EPA regulations limit certain contaminants in public water systems. The FDA sets similar limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.

Information for Vulnerable Populations:
Some individuals may be more susceptible to contaminants than the general population. Immunocompromised persons—such as those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly, and infants—may face increased health risks. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about drinking water. Lead Information:
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water primarily comes from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. While the City of Port Huron is responsible for providing quality drinking water, we cannot control the materials used in household plumbing. If your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If concerned, you may have your water tested for lead.

Children exposed to lead above action levels may experience developmental delays in physical or mental growth, with slight deficits in attention span and learning abilities. Adults may develop kidney problems or high blood pressure after long-term exposure.
