About Us
WHERE DOES SAN ANGELO'S WATER COME FROM?
San Angelo currently draws water from six different sources: Twin Buttes Reservoir, O.C. Fisher Lake, Lake Nasworthy, O.H. Ivie Reservoir, E.V. Spence Reservoir, and the South Concho River. The primary supply comes from O.H. Ivie Reservoir, with the South Concho River (fed by Twin Buttes and Lake Nasworthy) serving as a secondary source. These sources are sometimes blended.
In 2014, the Hickory Aquifer groundwater became available as an additional water source. A specialized treatment plant using ion exchange and pressure filtration removes radium and iron from this groundwater. The treated groundwater is then blended with surface water to further reduce mineral content.
SPECIAL HEALTH INFORMATION
Some residents may be more vulnerable to certain water contaminants, including Cryptosporidium. This includes infants, elderly persons, immunocompromised individuals undergoing cancer treatment, organ transplant recipients, those on steroid treatments, and people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about their municipal water consumption.
TTHMs (Total Trihalomethanes) can potentially cause health concerns. Long-term consumption of water with elevated TTHMs may affect liver, kidney, or central nervous system function and may increase cancer risk.
WATER INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
- Replacement of approximately 6,500 feet of water mains on major roads including Arden Road, Sherwood Way, and Knickerbocker Road ($1 million)
- Rehabilitation of water and sewer infrastructure along Martin Luther King Drive
- Replacement of approximately 4,000 feet of sewer mains along Concho River and Sulphur Draw
- Planned 2018 rehabilitation of water/sewer mains along Bell Street
WATER CONSERVATION TIPS
- Plug your bathtub before turning on water, then adjust temperature as it fills
- Fix leaky faucets promptly - small fixes make big differences
- Install rain sensors on automatic sprinkler systems
- Follow local watering restrictions - currently twice weekly with one-inch maximum
- Prevent water runoff to streets, gutters, or drainage areas
UNDERSTANDING WATER DISINFECTION
San Angelo uses chloramine disinfection (chlorine gas combined with liquid ammonium sulfate) to reduce the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs). While effective at disinfection, chloramine gradually releases ammonia as it moves through the distribution system, which can lead to nitrification and biofilm formation. The system periodically switches back to free chlorine to address these issues.
