About Us
We are pleased to present Evanston's annual water quality report, an important resource for our water customers. The Evanston water utility is committed to delivering the highest quality tap water possible. In 2017, as in previous years, your water has met all United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and State of Illinois health standards with no violations to report.
Your water source, Lake Michigan (surface water), serves as not only a vital commercial waterway and recreational resource with beautiful shorelines, but also an exceptional source of municipal water. Nearly half of the world's freshwater originates from Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes. According to USEPA assessments, Lake Michigan's water quality has shown significant improvement over the past 25 years.
Current regulations restrict industrial and sewage treatment discharges into Lake Michigan, which helps reduce contamination risks. All 63 miles of Illinois shoreline are now considered to be in good condition. The Illinois EPA assessment notes concerns about Lake Michigan water quantity and quality, as a 1967 Supreme Court decree limits Illinois water diversions, with the state currently approaching its allocation limit.
Evanston recognized the importance of water treatment long before modern requirements were established. In fact, our community has operated a water treatment facility for over a century! The Public Works Agency's Water Production Bureau staff works around the clock to maintain Evanston's tradition of excellence in providing safe, high-quality water.
