About Us
Sources of tap water (both municipal and bottled varieties) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or percolates through soil, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some instances, radioactive materials, while also potentially collecting substances from animal presence or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, farming operations
- Pesticides and herbicides from agricultural practices, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds, byproducts of industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, stormwater systems, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from energy production and mining activities
