About Us
Sun Prairie's municipal water system began with a pivotal decision in 1897, when the Town Board authorized Charles W. Hayden to establish an electric plant for community lighting. Operating as Sun Prairie Electric and Laundry, Hayden initially lit Main Street before expanding to residential areas. The company also managed telephone services and electric laundry operations.
In 1899, the town awarded its first well construction contract to F. Thompson & Sons, while Stegerwald and Lessner built the inaugural water tower at Columbus and Church streets (which remained until being decommissioned in 1991). The three-member Board of Water Commissioners held their first meeting in April 1903, with B.B. Cobb as water superintendent, joined by J.F. Dott and J.W. Rood.
Following a citizen petition with 42 signatures in 1910, the town purchased Hayden's electric plant for $6,800, marking a significant milestone in Sun Prairie's municipal utility development.

Street lighting in Sun Prairie consists primarily of 250-watt high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures. The utility owns and maintains over 750 street lights throughout the service area, with 78% using HPS fixtures and 22% equipped with energy-efficient 150-watt LED lights (250-watt equivalent). All new installations now use LED technology exclusively.
Funding for new street light installation in developing areas comes from either private developers or municipal governments. Similarly, adding lights to existing roadways is financed by either the city/township or the requesting private entity. While energy charges are paid by the municipality where lights are installed, Sun Prairie Utilities covers all maintenance and repair costs.
It's important to note that street lighting is designed specifically for vehicular and pedestrian safety at intersections, not for providing uniform lighting of sidewalks or properties for security purposes. The utility evaluates street light locations during circuit reconstruction, street renovation, tree management, or equipment failure incidents.
Placement criteria include proximity to intersections, positions along horizontal curves, vertical grade changes, and maintaining maximum separation distances of approximately 600 feet. Individual property considerations are not factors in street light placement, as entrance lighting, yard illumination, and security lighting remain property owners' responsibilities.
