About Us
Worthington Public Utilities is dedicated to delivering high-quality, reliable service at reasonable costs while maintaining environmentally sound practices. Our team of professionals works diligently to ensure safe municipal water for all Worthington residents.
We take pride in our water system's consistent compliance with all state and federal regulations. Using advanced testing technologies, we continuously monitor water quality to guarantee safety for your family's everyday use.
Following the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act, we share vital information with customers annually about their water supply. If you've wondered about your water source or why treatment matters, we encourage you to review our Consumer Confidence Report.
As Worthington grows, we remain committed to earning your trust in the water we deliver to homes and businesses. For a paper copy of the report, please contact Customer Service at (507) 372-8680. We ask that you share this information with non-billed water users like apartment tenants and nursing home residents.
Worthington draws water from groundwater sources including two wells within city limits, seven wells in the Lake Bella Well Field, and three wells located 2 miles southwest in the Malcolm Well Field. These wells range from 44 to 102 feet deep, drawing from Quaternary Buried Artesian and Quaternary Water Table aquifers. Since November 2012, we've also purchased treated water from Lincoln-Pipestone Rural Water System.
Our water treatment facility, built in 1990, removes iron and manganese minerals that, while not harmful, can cause aesthetic issues. The process includes adding chlorine and potassium permanganate before filtration, with additional chlorine afterward to maintain disinfection throughout the distribution system. We also add polyphosphate as a corrosion inhibitor and state-mandated fluoride to promote dental health.
Worthington Public Utilities addresses aging infrastructure by systematically replacing water mains based on leak history, coordinating with road reconstruction to maximize cost efficiency. We currently invest approximately $900,000 annually on infrastructure improvements.
