About Us
Sources of tap water (both municipal and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through underground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some instances, radioactive materials, and can absorb substances from animal presence or human activity.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants including salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharge, oil and gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from various sources including agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organics, which are byproducts of industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, stormwater runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that can occur naturally or result from oil and gas production activities
To ensure safe tap water, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for contaminants in bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection. All water, including bottled varieties, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
The Boynton Beach facility failed to complete required radiological contaminant sampling last year, violating monitoring requirements. Staff did not collect the necessary sample quantity, making it impossible to verify contaminant presence in the municipal water or assess potential health risks during this period. The monitoring period was January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2017. Two samples were required for each contaminant, but none were collected. Sampling resumed February 6, 2018, and analysis detected no radiological contaminants.
