About Us
POTENTIAL CONTAMINANTS IN SOURCE WATER INCLUDE:
• Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may originate from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.
• Inorganic contaminants, including salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.
• Pesticides and herbicides containing nitrogen, which may come from various sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses.
• Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic compounds, which are byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, agricultural applications, and septic systems.
• Radioactive contaminants, which can occur naturally or result from oil and gas production and mining operations.
To ensure tap water safety, the EPA and DDW establish regulations limiting certain contaminants in public water systems. DDW regulations also set contaminant limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection. Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. People with compromised immune systems (such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, those with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders), some elderly individuals, and infants may face higher infection risks. These individuals should consult their healthcare providers about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing the risk of cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminant infections are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
