Area and Location: Torrance spans approximately 21 square miles (12,312 acres) in southwestern Los Angeles County, with 1.5 miles of lifeguard-monitored beaches, shower facilities and public parking. The city maintains 550 miles of sidewalks and 90,000 street trees.
Population: Incorporated in 1921, Torrance has 146,860 residents with a daytime population that swells to over 250,000. It ranks as the 8th largest city in Los Angeles County and 33rd in California.
Climate: The city enjoys pleasant year-round weather with moderate temperatures, ocean breezes, low humidity and average annual rainfall of 12.55 inches.
City Services: Torrance employs 1,480 staff across 13 departments, including a Class 1 rated Fire Department with 159 sworn personnel and six stations. The Police Department consists of 241 sworn officers operating from one main station, one substation and three community centers.
Community Resources: Residents benefit from six public libraries and 46 Parks and Recreation facilities offering diverse activities and amenities.
Governance: Torrance operates under a Council/Manager system. The seven-member City Council establishes policy and budget priorities, while the City Manager oversees daily operations. Elected officials serve four-year terms, with Council members limited to two consecutive terms.
