The Missouri Department of Natural Resources conducted a comprehensive source water assessment to evaluate potential contamination risks to our municipal supply. This assessment included mapping source water areas for each intake point and conducting a thorough inventory of possible contaminants within these zones.

Assessment maps and detailed information can be accessed online at http://drinkingwater.Missouri.edu/swipe/swipmaps/passed.htm. You'll need our state-assigned identification code (found at the top of this report) to view our specific maps. These resources provide an excellent foundation for developing more robust source water protection strategies.

Why might contaminants appear in my tap water? All water sources, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Potential contaminant sources include:

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals, which can occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharge, or agricultural practices
  • Pesticides and herbicides from various agricultural, urban, and residential uses
  • Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and residential waste systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining

To ensure your tap water remains safe, the Department of Natural Resources establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, the Department of Health sets standards for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.

Some individuals may be particularly vulnerable to certain water contaminants, including those with compromised immune systems, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, the elderly, and infants. These individuals should seek specific advice from their healthcare providers about their drinking water.

City of Atchison Municipal Water Report Information

The City of Atchison operates under a Commission-Manager form of government, combining strong political leadership from elected officials with professional management expertise. The five-member City Commission (Governing Body) consists of officials elected at-large who establish the policies guiding city operations.

Commission members serve as the democratic voice of residents, focusing on issues responsive to citizen needs and priorities. Their responsibilities include:

  • Enacting ordinances (laws) and resolutions (policies)
  • Appointing the City Manager and members of advisory boards
  • Reviewing and approving the annual budget and tax rates
  • Establishing city fees and utility rates
  • Authorizing contracts on behalf of the city
  • Monitoring city programs to ensure optimal service delivery

Elections for three of the five commission seats occur in odd-numbered years. The two highest vote recipients receive four-year terms, while the third-highest receives a two-year term. Commissioners may seek re-election without term limits.

The Commission annually selects a Mayor from among its members to preside over meetings, facilitate communication between officials, and represent the community. A Vice-Mayor is also selected to fulfill these duties when needed.

Kansas CDC Tap Water Info

For more information on your drinking water, visit the U.S. CDC:

  1. Why does my water usage seem unusually high? You may not actually be using that much water - meter readings could be difficult to interpret or transposed. You might have an undetected leaky toilet or faucet. Contact our office and we'll help troubleshoot the issue.
  2. What should I do about low water pressure? First inspect your meter and surrounding area for potential leaks, then contact our office to report the pressure issue in your location.
  3. Why is my water discolored? Recent hydrant flushing for maintenance or training may have disturbed sediment in the pipes, or repairs might have introduced air into the lines causing a milky appearance. Try running your taps for approximately 5 minutes to clear your household plumbing.
  4. What chemicals are added to our municipal water? We only use chemicals certified by the National Safety Foundation specifically approved for drinking water treatment.
  5. My water tastes and smells unusual. Is it safe? All public water systems must maintain minimum chlorine levels of 0.2 mg/L (measured at line endpoints) by state law. Systems using chloramine disinfection must maintain 0.5 mg/L levels. We test these disinfectant levels daily to ensure safety.
  6. Why does debris come out when I run hot water? Your water heater likely needs flushing. CAUTION: Most manufacturers recommend hiring a professional for this service. If attempting yourself, consult your owner's manual to avoid injury or damage.
  7. Why do I have a previous balance when I know I paid? We may have received your payment after the due date or possibly not received it at all. Contact our office for assistance resolving this issue.
