About Us
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, channels, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water flows over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can absorb substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in water supplies include:
- Microbial contaminants: viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants: salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides: from agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants: synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, stormwater runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants: naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining activities
Benicia's water supply comes from three surface sources: Sacramento Delta water via North Bay Aqueduct (NBA), Lake Berryessa through Putah South Canal (PSC), and Lake Herman (emergency source). The NBA assessment (March 2003) identified vulnerability to cattle/sheep grazing activities, which contribute to turbidity, organic carbon, and coliform bacteria. Approximately 85% of the watershed consists of grazing land or irrigated pastures.
The PSC assessment (March 2003) identified illegal activities, unauthorized dumping, and herbicide application as primary concerns. PSC is also moderately vulnerable to highway runoff, storm drainage, and surface water recreation. Lake Herman's assessment (June 2002) noted urban runoff, herbicides/pesticides from Hiddenbrooke Golf Course and local residents/ranchers, and historic mining operations as vulnerability factors.
Despite these vulnerabilities, all treated water delivered to customers meets required standards. Assessment copies are available at Benicia Public Library, Water Quality Department (614 East 5th Street), or State Water Resources Control Board. For questions about water quality, please contact David Wenslawski at 746-4792 or email dwenslawski@ci.benicia.ca.us. Water concerns can also be reported to the Water Treatment Plant at 746-4394.

All water, including bottled water, may contain small amounts of contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Individuals with compromised immune systems (cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, some elderly, and infants) may be particularly vulnerable to infections. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about water consumption.
For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, or to receive guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
