City of Durango Municipal Water Report Info

The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company established Durango along the Animas River banks in September 1880 to support the San Juan mining district. Substantial silver deposits (and later, even more gold) were discovered in the mountains after the 1872 gold rush triggered settlements like Silverton, 50 miles north. Durango offered a moderate climate with reliable water and coal supplies for operating smelters to process precious metals.

The railroad strategically purchased land in what would become downtown Durango using various aliases to conceal their intentions and acquire properties at lower prices. Notably, when the train passed through Animas City heading north in 1881, it deliberately bypassed that settlement!

Durango, Colorado takes its name from Durango, Mexico. According to local accounts, Colorado's former territorial governor A.C. Hunt was traveling through the Mexican Durango when officials were selecting a name for the new Colorado town, noting similarities between the locations. The word "Durango" derives from the Basque term "Urango" meaning "water town" or "well-watered place." Today, Durango, Spain completes a trio of sister cities that exchange formal visits and ceremonial gifts.

Indigenous peoples camped along the Animas River for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence indicates a population surge in the late eighth century—approximately 1,200 years ago—with some experts suggesting more people inhabited the area then than now. When Ute Indians later settled here, these ancient Ancestral Puebloans had mysteriously vanished from their homeland, including the area now designated as Mesa Verde National Park.

By 1910, Durango's population had doubled to 4,686 residents. Mid-twentieth century brought many amenities still enjoyed today, including the airport with its 9,201-foot runway located on the Southern Ute Reservation about 12 miles south of the city, Fort Lewis College (relocated to Durango in 1956), and the Purgatory Durango Mountain ski resort which opened in 1965.
