About Us
Clean Water. Quality Life. Eagle River Water & Sanitation District (ERWSD) proudly presents this Consumer Confidence Report, highlighting the quality of water services delivered daily to your home. Our mission is providing you with safe, reliable municipal water.
Our water comes from several sources. Five wells in the Vail Golf Course area (approximately 100 feet deep) can produce 7.5 million gallons daily. Two wells in West Vail's Matterhorn area (about 60 feet deep) can produce 749,000 gallons daily. Additionally, a microfiltration plant supplied by Gore Creek surface water can produce 1 million gallons daily. We can also access 1.2 million gallons daily from the Eagle River through our Dowd Junction connection.
We encourage our customers to learn about their water utility. For questions about this report or to schedule a facility tour, please contact Customer Service at (970) 476-7480.
Understanding Your Water Source
Municipal water (both tap and bottled) originates from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while the FDA sets similar standards for bottled water. Our facilities are designed to treat for known contaminants in our watershed and meet or exceed Federal and State requirements.
A source water assessment has been completed by Colorado. To obtain a copy, visit the State's Source Water Assessment and Protection (SWAP) website at https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/cipher/swap-assessment-phase or contact Customer Service at (970) 476-7480.
Our watershed's susceptibility to potential contamination ranges from moderate to moderately high. This reflects conditions throughout the entire watershed. ERWSD continuously monitors its water sources and is committed to delivering high-quality municipal water.
Our source water area includes one surface water treatment facility and eight groundwater wells. Potential contamination sources include: storage tank sites, mine sites, hazardous waste generators, contaminated sites, superfund sites, chemical storage sites, wastewater discharge sites, residential areas, commercial/industrial zones, recreational areas, quarries, agricultural land, transportation corridors, and forests.
All municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. This doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Immuno-compromised persons (cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly, and infants) may be particularly vulnerable to infections and should consult their physicians about drinking water.
Lead levels in your home may be higher than in other homes due to plumbing materials. If concerned, you may wish to have your water tested and flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using it.
For information about contaminants and potential health effects, or to obtain EPA and CDC guidelines on reducing infection risk from cryptosporidium and microbiological contaminants, call the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
2017 Water Quality Testing Results
ERWSD routinely monitors for contaminants according to federal and state laws. All detected contaminants in 2017 were below permitted levels, and there were no violations. We're required to monitor some contaminants less than once yearly since concentrations aren't expected to vary significantly year to year.
