New Britain Water Department
About Us
Where Does My Water Come From? The New Britain Water Department's customers receive water from eight different sources. The Shuttle Meadow Water Treatment Plant draws water from Shuttle Meadow, Wassel, Whigville, Wolcott, White's Bridge, Hart Pond, and Nepaug reservoirs. Together, these reservoirs hold approximately 2.8 billion gallons of water. The department also operates 3 well fields: the upper and lower White's Bridge well fields in Bristol and the Patton Brook in Southington. Last year, due to severe drought conditions, the New Britain Water Department accessed water from the MDC's Nepaug reservoir.
Quality First: Mayor Erin E. Stewart and The Board of Water Commissioners are proud to present our annual water quality report covering January 1 through December 31, 2017. For decades, the New Britain Water Department has delivered premium quality municipal water to New Britain residents, and we remain committed to this mission.
Count on Us: Delivering exceptional tap water involves complex processes beyond simple distribution. Water treatment requires extensive expertise, with plant operators undergoing rigorous certification and continuous training. Our water professionals must master diverse subjects including mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics. Their daily responsibilities include:
- Operating and maintaining purification equipment
- Monitoring meters, gauges, and operating conditions
- Conducting water testing and evaluating results
- Maintaining optimal water chemistry
- Applying technical formulas to determine treatment requirements
- Documenting test results for regulatory compliance
- Serving the community through education and outreach
Water Treatment Process: Our treatment begins by drawing raw water from our sources and disinfecting it with ozone gas to protect against Cryptosporidium. Ozone also oxidizes metals and eliminates taste and odor compounds. Next, water enters a mixing tank where poly aluminum chloride causes small particles to clump together and settle for removal. The water then passes through granular activated carbon and fine sand filters to remove smaller particles and organic compounds. Finally, we add chlorine to maintain disinfection in the distribution system, calcium carbonate to reduce pipe corrosion, and fluoride for dental health. After resting in a clean well, the water is ready for distribution to homes and businesses.
Source Water Protection: The New Britain Water Department takes pride in maintaining some of Connecticut's finest water sources. Our team regularly patrols watersheds, conducts inspections, and performs extensive water quality testing to ensure continued excellence.
Community Participation: You're invited to participate in our public forums. The Board of Water Commissioners meets monthly at 6:30 p.m. at 50 Caretaker Road, New Britain, CT. Meeting dates for 2018-2019 are available on our website.
