About Us
Connecticut is among the few states where only Class A water (water not receiving discharge from sewage treatment facilities) can be utilized for municipal supply purposes. Sources of tap water (both from municipal systems and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells.
As water travels across land surfaces or through ground layers, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials. It can also pick up substances resulting from human activity or animal presence. Contaminants potentially present in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants including salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, and mining
- Pesticides and herbicides from agricultural activities, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds, which are byproducts of industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, or septic systems
- Radioactive substances that can be naturally occurring or result from mining and quarrying operations
- Radon, a radioactive gas commonly found in well water (not present in MDC supply since it comes from surface water reservoirs)
To ensure safe tap water, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, the FDA sets standards for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection. All municipal water, including bottled products, can reasonably be expected to contain at least trace amounts of some contaminants.

The Metropolitan District (MDC) is a non-profit municipal enterprise authorized by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1929 to provide quality water and sewerage services on a regional basis. The MDC delivers potable water, water pollution control, mapping services, and household hazardous waste collection to eight member municipalities: Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor.
Additionally, the MDC supplies tap water to portions of Farmington, Glastonbury, East Granby and South Windsor, classified as non-member towns. The MDC's mission is to provide customers with safe, pure municipal water, environmentally protective wastewater collection and treatment, and related services benefiting member communities.
