The Hazardville Water Company is proud to present this year's Annual Municipal Water Quality Report. This document aims to inform you about your tap water quality and the services we provide daily. Our primary goal is delivering safe, reliable water to your home. We're confident this report will help you understand our efforts to enhance water treatment processes and protect our valuable water resources.

We are dedicated to ensuring the highest quality municipal water. All HWC treatment facility staff are certified at or above the level required by the State of Connecticut for our system. Certification requires practical experience in water treatment plus passing a state-administered exam through the Department of Public Health.

Hazardville Water Company customers receive water from eleven underground wells located throughout Enfield. Groundwater naturally filters through soil layers, typically requiring minimal additional treatment. However, water from our Avery wells undergoes filtration to remove manganese, a mineral that can cause staining on plumbing fixtures, laundry, and appliances. We also add chlorine as a preventative measure against waterborne illnesses.

We're pleased to confirm that all our water meets federal and state safety standards for consumption. To prevent contamination of our source water, HWC follows a comprehensive protection plan that's reviewed and updated yearly. This includes regular inspections of critical areas that could affect water quality, continuous monitoring of both source and distribution water, and routine sanitary surveys of all well fields.

All tap water, including bottled varieties, can reasonably be expected to contain small amounts of some contaminants—no water is completely pure. As water travels through ground layers, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and radioactive materials. Human and animal activities may also impact water quality through underground storage tank leaks, failing septic systems, chemical spills, and agricultural runoff.

The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for bottled water contaminants. Remember that the mere presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk when levels remain below regulatory thresholds. Based on EPA primary health-related standards, HWC water is safe for consumption. In 2003, Connecticut's Department of Public Health and Department of Environmental Protection completed assessments of Hazardville Water Company's sources. These assessments provide customers information about their water's origin, potential contamination sources, and protection measures. The source water assessment shows a moderate to high risk of contamination from known potential sources, though this doesn't necessarily indicate poor water quality or health code violations. The Hazardville Water Company is a private public utility established in 1892 and has remained family-owned and operated throughout its history. Currently in its third generation of ownership by the Avery and Dewing Families, who acquired the company from the Bridges Family in 1937, the utility has grown substantially over the decades.

In the 1930s, the company served approximately 1,000 customers with just a few miles of water mains. Today, Hazardville Water Company serves 7,200 customers through 117 miles of mains, utilizing 12 wells capable of pumping 4.2 million gallons daily.

In 1992, the Company celebrated its centennial by adopting a new mission statement: To strive for the highest degree of value, service and professionalism. HWC actively welcomes customer feedback, considering it an essential component in determining service quality improvements and as a vital indicator of current service levels.
