About Us
Water hardness results from naturally occurring dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium in water supplies. While there's no strict definition of hard versus soft water, generally water with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) levels above 130 ppm or 8 grains per gallon is considered hard and may cause scale buildup in pipes, on faucets, and leave white spots on dishes.
The City's water supply hardness ranges from 79 to 563 ppm, averaging approximately 20 grains per gallon.
WHY MIGHT MY WATER APPEAR YELLOW/BROWN?
Our surface water source occasionally contains trace amounts of dissolved Iron and Manganese, which can cause yellow or brown discoloration in water. This is most visible in white bathtubs, sinks, and toilets. This discoloration does not pose a health risk, and flushing your pipes often resolves the issue. Naturally occurring organic materials can also cause color changes.
WHY DOES MY WATER APPEAR CLOUDY OR MILKY?
Cloudy or milky appearance typically results from air bubbles in the water. Our distribution system carries water under pressure, which keeps air dissolved. These bubbles initially make water look cloudy but will gradually rise as the water clears.
WHY DOES MY WATER TASTE OR SMELL UNUSUAL?
Water taste comes from dissolved minerals. The two most common causes of unpleasant taste or odor are:
- Chlorine smell or taste results from the disinfectant necessary for water safety. If particularly strong, leaving water in an open container allows chlorine to dissipate. A carbon filter may also help.
- A rotten-egg smell typically comes from hydrogen sulfide (non-toxic in small amounts), usually from hot water taps. Slightly increasing water heater temperature, periodically draining the water heater, or letting water run briefly may help eliminate the odor.
IS FLUORIDE ADDED TO OUR WATER SUPPLY?
No, fluoride is not added to the City's water supply, though it does occur naturally.
