California Water Utility Companies

The City of Compton's water system was designed with maximum flexibility in mind. We maintain six active wells strategically positioned throughout Compton, along with several imported water connections. This infrastructure allows us to adapt during emergencies, drought, or other unusual circumstances when water sources may need to change.

Please note that surface water imported by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) combines State Water Project water from northern California with Colorado River Aqueduct water. During 2015, your water supply was 100% groundwater drawn from the Central Basin aquifer.

Essential Information About Municipal Water Contaminants

Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land surfaces or through underground layers, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material. It can also pick up substances resulting from animal presence and human activities.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants: viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Radioactive contaminants: naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining activities
  • Inorganic contaminants: salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides: from agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic chemical contaminants: synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems

To ensure drinking water safety, the EPA and California Department of Drinking Water (DDW) enforce regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similar DDW regulations establish limits for bottled water that provide equal public health protection.

All water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
