Water Sources: Staunton's water comes from a natural underground spring and two reservoirs. As water flows across land or through soil, it dissolves minerals and may pick up substances from animal presence or human activities. Contaminants in source water may originate from septic systems, wastewater treatment facilities, agricultural operations, urban runoff, residential usage, and various other activities.
Potential Contaminants: All water sources, including bottled water, may contain small amounts of certain contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. However, some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems—such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants—should seek medical advice about their drinking water.
Cryptosporidium Testing: Monthly testing is conducted over a two-year period as mandated by VDH and EPA. The City is completing this required sampling during 2016-2018. EPA and CDC guidelines on reducing risk from microbiological contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Lead in Water: The City fully complies with VDH and EPA requirements for lead in water. Our Water Treatment Plant tests finished water for lead annually, and we meet all standards of the EPA's 'Lead and Copper Rule'. Our most recent required lead sampling was completed in June 2017.
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically enters drinking water from service lines and plumbing components after leaving the water meter. While the City provides quality water, we cannot control materials used in home plumbing systems. To minimize potential lead exposure, run your tap for 15-30 seconds or until the water becomes cold if it has been sitting unused for several hours. If concerned about lead, consider having your water tested. Test kits are available online or at local hardware stores. The City of Salem Water Department inaugurated a cutting-edge water treatment facility on February 22, 2005, capable of producing 10 million gallons of clean water daily. This advanced plant can extract water from both the Roanoke River and three on-site groundwater wells, with the wells contributing up to two million gallons daily to complement river water supplies.
The facility features a sophisticated SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) System, giving operators comprehensive monitoring capabilities for every aspect of the treatment process plus 19 remote sites throughout the City. A state-of-the-art microbiological laboratory was incorporated into the new facility, along with administrative offices for staff members.
Designed with future water regulations in mind, the plant is equipped to meet Staunton's water needs well into the 21st century. Additional advantages include an emergency generator capable of powering operations for several days during crises, large pre-settling basins, and specialized sludge removal systems that enhance the water treatment process.
