Water quality is a vital concern for our Sterling community and the entire region. The City of Sterling and its water partners are committed to meeting or exceeding all state and federal water quality standards, including the crucial Lead and Copper Rule.
Sterling purchases water from a regional supplier, with our primary source being groundwater influenced by surface water conditions. Our team maintains the network of water mains delivering this water to your home. This year's Water Quality Report highlights the dedication of our water professionals in providing safe, clean water.
Source water assessments conducted by state agencies have rated our water supply's susceptibility to contamination. Our water treatment facilities implement multiple protective measures including chemical containment, spill response protocols, and specialized reduction programs for harmful substances.
Our treatment process includes several important steps:
- Initial disinfection with chlorine to eliminate harmful microorganisms
- Addition of alum to remove particles causing cloudiness
- Fluoride addition to protect dental health
- Sand filtration to remove additional contaminants
- Final treatment with orthophosphates to minimize lead leaching from plumbing
