Pueblo Municipal Water Company and EPAPueblo Municipal Water Report Info
Pueblo's rich history extends back to 1842 when it was established as Fort Pueblo. The city's transformation from a small fortification to a cornerstone of Colorado was driven by mineral mining operations. Modern Pueblo formed through the unification of four separate communities: Pueblo, South Pueblo, Central Pueblo, and Bessemer.
Famously declared "America's Home of Heroes" by the U.S. Congress in 1993, Pueblo celebrates National Medal of Honor Day and has proudly hosted up to four living Medal of Honor recipients within the community. The city has consistently played a vital role in Colorado's development, from bringing railways to the state to supporting its agricultural heritage.
Since 1872, Pueblo has hosted the Colorado State Fair, originally organized by the Southern Colorado Agricultural and Industrial Association. The fair has relocated several times throughout its history, finally settling at its current 102-acre location. The fairgrounds feature the historic Mexican Pavilion, which initially served as Pueblo's police headquarters, along with fourteen other historically significant structures.
The Great Flood of 1921 stands as one of the most devastating natural disasters in Pueblo's history. The catastrophe began when sudden rainfall caused the Arkansas River to flood just ten miles west of the city. Conditions worsened as Fountain Creek also flooded from downpours 30 miles north. When these waterways converged in downtown Pueblo, the results were catastrophic – claiming 1,500 lives and causing $20 million in damage. Floodwaters reached more than 15 feet in some areas, destroying most bridges over Fountain Creek.
During this crisis, telephone operators demonstrated extraordinary courage by remaining at their posts despite rising waters, continuing to issue warnings to downstream residents. The community response was remarkable, with the Elks Club serving as a relief center for 3,000 refugees daily until additional assistance arrived from organizations like the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and military units.
