Following particularly dry winter seasons, all residents must adopt water-wise practices as part of California's lifestyle.

On May 9, 2016, California Governor Jerry Brown issued an Executive Order permanently prohibiting wasteful water practices. These include banning hosing off sidewalks and driveways, washing vehicles without shut-off nozzles, operating decorative fountains without recirculation systems, watering landscapes causing excess runoff, irrigating within 48 hours after rainfall, and watering ornamental turf in public medians with potable water.

1. Why can't I dispose of used motor oil in the alley? Used motor oil can contaminate groundwater, and runoff will eventually reach rivers or nearby bodies of water, harming aquatic ecosystems.
2. Why must I contain silt at my construction site? Soil washed away during rainfall ends up in city drainage systems and streets. This is expensive for the city to clean and may cause drainage system failures. Additionally, silt entering our waterways negatively impacts aquatic life.
3. What are the consequences of not maintaining proper silt containment? The city, KDHE, or EPA may issue fines to the permit holder and require all work to stop until the situation is properly addressed.
