Grafton Water District
About Us
The Grafton Water District was established in 1984 through an Act of the Massachusetts Legislature. The district took over operations from Massachusetts American Water Company in February 1988, which had managed the system since 1893.
Currently serving over 10,000 residents, the system includes:
- Four wells and three pumping stations
- An iron and manganese water treatment facility
- Over 60 miles of distribution piping (2-16 inches in diameter)
- Three storage tanks
- Two booster pump stations
- More than 500 fire hydrants
The District holds an annual meeting each April where registered voters approve the budget and elect officers. Board of Water Commissioners meetings occur the second Tuesday of each month at 4:30 PM at the District office (44 Millbury Street). These public meetings address community concerns and authorize monthly expenditures.

Storage capacity is maintained through three tanks, supported by two booster pump stations and more than 500 fire hydrants throughout the service area.
Each April, the District conducts an annual meeting where registered voters approve the budget and elect officers. Board positions include three water commissioners (serving staggered three-year terms), a clerk elected every three years, and a moderator also elected every three years.
Special meetings may be called as needed throughout the year. All meetings are publicly announced at the District office, town libraries, post offices, town hall, and in local newspapers. The Grafton Board of Water Commissioners meets the second Tuesday of each month at 4:30 PM at the District office (44 Millbury Street) to address community concerns and authorize expenditures.
