About Athol: Initially established in the 1730s under the name Pequoiag, Athol nestles among the rolling hills of north central Massachusetts, approximately 70 miles west of Boston. The early pioneers sustained themselves through farming and hunting, with the growing settlement officially becoming the town of Athol in 1762.

By the late 18th century, several grist, saw, and fulling mills dotted the banks of the Millers and Tully Rivers. The early 1800s witnessed industrial expansion typical of "mill towns" during that era. Factories powered primarily by the Millers River, combined with market access facilitated by the Vermont and Massachusetts Railroad in the 1840s, triggered such rapid commercial growth that additional rail lines to Springfield and Fitchburg soon followed.

In 1868, the Athol Machine Company was established to produce a hacking machine invented by Laroy S. Starrett. Later in 1881, Mr. Starrett founded the L.S. Starrett Company, now an international enterprise still manufacturing high-quality precision tools. The Starrett facilities dominate downtown along the Millers River and remain the largest local employer. Union Twist Drill Co. also operated a substantial factory downtown, employing up to 800 workers at its peak before ceasing operations in the 1980s. These two companies earned Athol its legacy as the "Tool Town."

The town and North Quabbin region boast natural beauty and numerous recreational opportunities.
