This report presents a snapshot of the municipal water quality provided by the Department of Public Works during 2018. Gloucester's water supply comes from five surface water reservoirs. Before distribution, the water undergoes multiple treatment processes:
• Fine particle removal using polyaluminum chloride
• Oxidation of manganese and iron with potassium permanganate
• Corrosion control and pH adjustment using sodium hydroxide
• Additional corrosion prevention with orthophosphate (creating a protective coating in pipes)
• Alkalinity enhancement with sodium bicarbonate
• Treatment plant disinfection with sodium hypochlorite
• Distribution system disinfection using chloramines (created by adding ammonium sulfate)
The treatment process incorporates fine particle settling followed by rapid sand filtration to reduce turbidity. Sodium fluoride is added at levels determined by the Gloucester Board of Health for dental protection. The Water Compliance Office regularly tests the water supply according to Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and Federal EPA guidelines.
