About Us
The Pittsfield water system undergoes regular inspections by the Massachusetts Division of Environment Protection (MassDEP). These assessments evaluate our technical, financial, and operational capacity to deliver safe water to residents. To maintain high quality standards, our system is operated by Massachusetts-certified professionals who manage daily operations.
In 2017, several improvements were made to Pittsfield's public water infrastructure, including the replacement of 16 hydrants. Engineering and planning work was completed for cleaning and lining the main on outer West Housatonic Street, along with rehabilitation of the Upper Sackett Reservoir Dam—projects implemented in 2018.
Pittsfield's drinking water comes from six surface reservoirs, not from groundwater wells. Cleveland Reservoir and Sackett Reservoir are located in Hinsdale, while Ashley Lake, Lower Ashley Intake Reservoir, Farnham Reservoir, and Sandwash Reservoir are in Washington. The city restricts activities around these reservoirs and surrounding lands to protect water quality.
Our water undergoes comprehensive treatment at two facilities: the Ashley Water Treatment Plant in Dalton and the Cleveland Water Treatment Plant in Hinsdale. The treatment process includes adding aluminum sulfate and sodium aluminate to remove particulates through coagulation and flocculation. Sodium hydroxide and zinc orthophosphate reduce pipe corrosion, while chlorine is added for disinfection. Treated water is distributed through five pump stations and stored in five ground-level reservoirs.
MassDEP has prepared a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) Report for Pittsfield's water supply, assigning a "high" susceptibility rating due to land use patterns within the protection area. Potential contamination sources include improperly maintained septic systems, household products like fertilizers and pesticides, underground storage tanks, and stormwater runoff from roads and lawns. To protect our water, the SWAP report recommends controlling access to areas surrounding the water supply, conducting regular inspections, training emergency response teams, and encouraging residents to limit chemical use and properly maintain septic systems.
Cross connections—points where non-potable water could potentially enter the drinking water system—pose significant risks. These can occur when garden hoses are submerged in buckets or connected to chemical sprayers. Backflow prevention is essential to maintain water safety throughout the distribution system.

Interestingly, Colonel Jacob Wendell, who's credited with establishing Pittsfield's first settlement, never actually lived here and may never have visited. In 1738, this wealthy Boston businessman purchased 24,000 acres of land originally called Pontoosuck—a Mohican term meaning "a field or haven for winter deer"—as a speculative investment to subdivide and sell to settlers.
Wendell partnered with Philip Livingston, a wealthy Albany resident, and Colonel John Stoddard from Northampton, who already owned 1,000 acres in the area. Young settlers arrived in 1743 to clear land, but threats from Indian attacks during the French and Indian wars drove them away, leaving the area uninhabited by European settlers for several more years.
Eventually in 1752, settlers primarily from Westfield, Massachusetts arrived, and a community began developing. It was incorporated as Pontoosuck Plantation in 1753. By 1761, with approximately 200 residents, the plantation became the Township of Pittsfield, named to honor British Prime Minister William Pitt, who later advocated for the colonists' cause before the Revolution.
After the Revolutionary War, Pittsfield had grown to about 2,000 residents. While primarily agricultural, the numerous streams flowing into the Housatonic River supported mills producing timber, grain, paper, and textiles. The introduction of Merino sheep from Spain in 1807 made the area the center of U.S. woolen manufacturing—an industry that dominated the local economy for nearly a century.
By the late 1800s, Pittsfield had become a bustling community. In 1891, the City of Pittsfield was incorporated, and William Stanley, who had relocated his Electric Manufacturing Company from Great Barrington, produced the first electric transformer. Stanley's enterprise evolved into General Electric, which significantly influenced Pittsfield's growth—by 1930, the population exceeded 50,000.
Though GE Advanced Materials remains one of the city's largest employers, its workforce has declined from over 13,000 to fewer than 700 with the closure or relocation of transformer and aerospace operations.
