Lawn Meter Options
Single-family residential customers who use substantial volumes of water outdoors may benefit from lawn meters. These meters are available for installation on outdoor hose faucets or irrigation systems, allowing you to avoid sewer charges for water that doesn't enter the sanitary system.
To obtain a lawn meter:
- Review the Lawn Meter Information and Permit Form
- Contact Public Works at 906-228-0444 to schedule delivery
- Note that customers are responsible for permit and plumbing costs
- Utility staff will handle meter wiring and inspection
Multifamily and commercial properties can also apply for lawn meters with a variance from City Ordinance 48-118. These meters support our community's environmental initiatives.
Water Meter Services
For meter installation or troubleshooting, contact Utility Billing at 228-0420. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:30 pm (Memorial Day to Labor Day) and 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (Labor Day to Memorial Day). Service technicians are available from 6:30 am to 10:30 pm for your convenience.
Backflow Protection
To safeguard our water system from potential contaminants, the Utility Inspector ensures proper protection is in place for boilers, irrigation systems, chemical tanks, and other water-connected devices. State law requires verification of appropriate protection on customer premises. For questions about backflow protection or to schedule an inspection for an underground irrigation system, contact the Utility Inspector at 228-0444.
Remember to protect water pipes from freezing, especially in garages and crawl spaces, using heat tapes or insulation.
Storage Tank Management
Water storage tanks undergo regular safety inspections and are drained approximately every five years for internal inspection, cleaning, and repair. For public safety, these facilities are restricted areas – please respect safety fences and report trespassers.
Water Quality Issues
If you notice cloudy or discolored water, it may be due to maintenance flushing. Utility staff flush different sections of the water main system annually between June and September to remove corrosion, clear deposits, and ensure optimal performance. This high-volume flushing may temporarily discolor nearby water, which typically clears after running taps at full volume for several minutes. If problems persist, call 906.228.0444.
Hydrant Meter Requirements
All private use of fire hydrants requires a permit and meter, available from the Public Works Department at 906.228.0444.
Water Volume Concerns
Many local buildings use galvanized iron pipes that can lose up to 50% capacity after 15 years due to internal corrosion. If your water volume seems insufficient, schedule an assessment by calling city water distribution at 228-0444. The city replaces numerous service lines annually, handling the portion under the street right-of-way while property owners are responsible for lines from property boundaries to meters. Type K copper tubing (minimum 1" diameter) is used for city portions.
