In April 1837, George Miller traveled to this state, walking from his home in Lockport, N.Y., taking the canal boat to Buffalo and steamer to Detroit. He then continued on foot to his new home in Independence Township.
Following the War of 1812, the federal government designated 6 million acres of land for returning soldiers, with 2 million acres located in Michigan. Initial surveys reported Michigan land as mostly swampy and uncultivable, temporarily halting distribution of homesteads to soldiers.
By 1816, Governor Lewis Cass successfully pushed for survey resumption. Migration to Michigan accelerated significantly after the Erie Canal's completion in 1825, which offered a more affordable travel option that accommodated livestock and household goods necessary for settlement.
The first settlers arrived in Independence Township during the 1820s and 1830s, primarily from New Jersey and New York. John W. Beardslee from Sussex County, New Jersey purchased the first tract of land in section 35 in 1826, settling there in 1831. By 1834, most sections in the southern half of the township had been acquired.
The township's geography featured flat plains in the lower sections (particularly the Sashabaw Plains in the southeast), mixed with rolling hills and numerous lakes connected by branches of the Clinton River. Many lakes were surrounded by marshland.
By 1840, the township had 830 residents, with farming being the primary occupation. The 1850 census showed over 1,200 residents, with a growing diversity of professions, especially in Clarkston Village, including carpenters, coopers, blacksmiths, wagon makers, shoemakers, merchants, cabinet makers, physicians, and teachers.
By the early 1900s, the township's numerous lakes began attracting tourists from Detroit during summer months. The arrival of automobiles made travel easier, leading to construction of summer cottages and subdivision of farmland, especially around lakes. This trend continued until the Depression temporarily halted further development in the mid-1930s.
