About Us
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment provides our Source Water Assessment Report (SWAP), evaluating potential contamination risks to our water supply. This critical information helps us enhance treatment methods and prepare for future challenges.

Our mission is to deliver safe, reliable municipal water to every household we serve. All water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains trace amounts of some substances. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
Important Health Information: Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems (cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, elderly individuals, and infants) should seek medical advice about their water consumption.
Water Sources and Potential Contaminants: Our water comes from rivers, lakes, streams, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels through these sources, it dissolves natural minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity, including:
- Microbial contaminants: viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants: salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, wastewater discharge, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides: from various sources including agriculture, urban runoff, and residential use
- Radioactive contaminants: naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production activities
- Organic chemical contaminants: synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
Lead in Water: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health issues, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in home water often comes from plumbing materials. If concerned, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking, especially after periods of non-use. Left Hand Water District History: Serving rural Boulder and Weld Counties since the 1960s, our service area is generally bounded by Longmont (north), Boulder (south), I-25 (east), and the foothills (west). We source water from both the Lefthand Creek watershed and Colorado-Big Thompson project rights. The district actively participates in the Lefthand Watershed Oversight Group (LWOG) to protect local water supplies.

Left Hand Water District has served rural Boulder and Weld County residents since the mid-1960s. Our service area is generally bounded by Longmont to the north, Boulder to the south, I-25 to the east, and the foothills to the west.
We obtain and treat water from both the Lefthand Creek watershed and through rights in the Colorado-Big Thompson project. The district actively participates in the Lefthand Watershed Oversight Group (LWOG) to protect our local water supplies.
The district began in 1960 when a small group of farmers and rural landowners in Boulder County decided to build a residential water supply system to serve families dependent on wells and cisterns. They initially formed the Left Hand Domestic Water Users Association and restructured financing through the Farmers Home Administration as regulations changed.
Over the years, our system has expanded to serve additional communities. In 1962, residents east of Boulder requested service and joined as the Boulder Valley Water Users Association. In 1990, voters approved transforming the organization into the Left Hand Water District, a semi-municipal water activity enterprise under state regulations.
