Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:
Monticello Municipal Water Company and CDCWhy do I have no or low water pressure?
If you're experiencing no water or low pressure, try to answer these questions:
- Is the aerator on the tap clogged?
- Is the customer-side shut-off valve closed or frozen (during winter)?
- Is the problem different between hot and cold water or at different locations in your home?
- Do you have a whole home filter or water softener?
If you answered "yes" to any of these, you may need a plumber to address an issue with your household plumbing. If you answered "no" to all questions, consider:
- Are City crews working in your area?
- Are your neighbors experiencing the same problem?
- Do you notice soft, wet spots in your yard or pavement area?
- Do you see water flowing outside more heavily than normal or in unusual places?
If you answered "yes" to these, there might be an issue with the City water line. There could be a leak on the mainline, hydrant flushing may be occurring, or there might be high demand. For more information, contact 405.533.8048 during 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and 405.372.3292 after hours or on weekends.
How do I turn my water off for home maintenance?
If you have a shut-off valve on your side of the meter, you or your plumber can use that. If not, call the City at 405.533.8048 to request water shutoff at your meter. The City can install a customer-side valve for you at no charge – call to schedule. Unless it's an emergency, neither you nor your plumber should open your meter box or operate the meter valve.
How will I be affected during a Water or Sewer Project?
Different types of water and sewer work occur throughout the City, performed by developers, the Water Utilities Engineering Department, or as routine maintenance by the Water Utilities Department. Your water service may be interrupted during this work. For planned work, you'll receive advance notice by mail or door tag. If you've registered with Be Informed Stillwater, you'll also receive notifications via your chosen method.
During emergency repairs, advance notification isn't possible. Our goal during all service interruptions is to minimize downtime. Water line work requires excavation equipment in public rights-of-way or easements. For safety, avoid entering work zones where hazards like open trenches exist. Street access may be temporarily restricted but should not prevent access to your property.
If you notice any utility service not working properly, try to notify workers onsite without entering the work area. If no workers are present, contact the utility company directly for fastest service.
After completion, the work site will be restored to as good or better condition. Depending on the season, new sod may take time to establish. While not required, watering new sod in the right-of-way helps it grow properly.
How can I flush my indoor plumbing?
Start outside your home if possible:
- Locate an outdoor spigot closest to the water meter
- Run water with the tap fully open for at least 5 minutes (use a hose to direct water if needed)
Then move inside:
- Remove aerator screens from all faucets
- Start with the tap closest to your meter on the main floor
- Run water fully open for 3-5 minutes
- Repeat with each tap including bathtubs and showers
