About Us
In the past year, Aberdeen monitored your municipal water for potential contaminants. This report provides a snapshot of the water quality we supplied. It includes information about water sources, content, and how it compares to EPA and state standards.
We're dedicated to providing you with thorough information because informed residents are our strongest allies. We serve over 26,091 consumers approximately 3,250,000 gallons of water daily from our surface water sources. State assessments have determined that the Aberdeen public water supply system has a medium susceptibility rating.
For questions or to learn about public meeting opportunities, please contact Karl Alberts at (605)626-7011.
Water Source Information
Municipal water (both tap and bottled) originates from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and can collect substances from animal presence or human activity.
Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals (naturally occurring or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, farming)
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining
The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA creates similar protections for bottled water. All water sources typically contain at least trace amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants.
If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. Though we provide high-quality water, we cannot control all plumbing components. Flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption can reduce potential lead exposure.
For more information about contaminants, potential health effects, or testing methods, contact the EPA's Safe Water Hotline (800-426-4791) or visit http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
