Rapid City utilizes multiple water sources throughout its municipal system. Our primary sources include two infiltration galleries positioned along the Rapid Creek alluvium: the Jackson Springs Gallery and Girl Scouts Gallery. Additionally, we operate eight wells drawing water from the Minnelusa and Madison Aquifers.
Surface water from Rapid Creek, originating in the Rapid Creek watershed west of the city, serves as another vital source. This watershed encompasses both Deerfield and Pactola Reservoirs, which supply water to the Mount View and Jackson Springs surface water treatment facilities for both city and county usage, as well as downstream irrigation purposes.
The Rapid City Water Division manages and maintains the Deerfield and Pactola dams under contract with the US Bureau of Reclamation. State assessments have determined that the susceptibility ranking for Rapid City's public water system is medium.
