This report aims to keep Addison residents informed about their tap water quality and the monitoring standards required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). If you have questions about this report, please contact Jim Russo, Water Department Foreman, at (630) 620-2020.

Addison receives all water through the DuPage Water Commission (DWC), via Chicago's Jardine Water Filtration Plant. The village has provided 100% Lake Michigan water since March 1992. The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations set similar standards for bottled water to ensure public health protection.

All drinking water, including bottled varieties, may contain small amounts of certain contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. People with compromised immune systems—such as cancer patients undergoing treatment, organ transplant recipients, those with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants—should seek advice from healthcare providers about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminant risks are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity. Potential contaminants include:

  • Microbial contaminants: viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants: salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, farming, or mining
  • Pesticides and herbicides: from agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential use
  • Organic chemical contaminants: synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants: naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining

Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

Illinois CDC Tap Water Info

For more information on your drinking water, visit the U.S. CDC:

Addison Drinking Water Company and CDC
  1. Can I turn my water meter on or off myself? No. City workers will handle this for you at no charge. The water meter belongs to the City, and you may be charged for any damages. Contact Public Works at 972-377-5556 or the emergency number 214-537-5645 after hours for assistance.
  2. Do I have additional responsibilities as a water customer? Yes, you must keep your water meter clear and accessible for reading and maintenance, including meters in utility easements.
  3. Should I notify the City when moving? Yes, contact a Customer Representative before moving to close your account. This can be done in person, by phone, or by sending a letter with your closing date and forwarding address. You're responsible for charges until your final date.
  4. How can I check for water leaks? Turn off all water inside and outside your home (except the master valve). Record your meter reading, then don't use any water for one hour. Check the meter again – if the reading has increased, you have a leak that needs repair.
  5. Is fluoride added to my water? Yes.
  6. Who should I contact about sewer service issues? For sewage backups, call Public Works at 972-292-3657. They'll inspect the main line to determine whether the problem is the City's responsibility or the homeowner's.
  7. What are Customer Service's hours? Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
  8. What are the city's responsibilities for water line repairs? The city maintains main lines and meters up to the connection point with the customer's service line.
  9. What are the city's responsibilities for sewer problems? The city handles sewer main lines and service lateral repairs up to the property line.
  10. What happens if my water is shut off for non-payment? Service will be restored after paying the full balance due plus a $40 disconnect/reconnect fee.
  11. What if I don't receive my water bill? Your account is billed monthly. If you haven't received your bill by the 10th, call our office immediately. Not receiving a bill doesn't exempt you from payment responsibility.
  12. What if I believe my high bill is due to a faulty meter? Water meters typically slow down rather than speed up when malfunctioning. You can schedule testing with advance notice. If the meter tests correctly, residential customers pay a $50 testing fee (commercial accounts are tested at cost). No fee applies if the meter tests incorrectly.
  13. What if my water bill seems too high? Check your meter reading against the one on your bill. If it's lower, call Customer Service to have a meter reader verify. If it's higher, check for leaks in your plumbing or service line.
  14. What if I can't pay my bill on time? Call Customer Service at (214) 975-0480 to discuss payment arrangements, which can usually be accommodated.
  15. What payment methods are accepted? Cash, check, money order, and most credit cards.
  16. What numbers should I call? For Customer Service during business hours, water leaks, sewer backups, or other water emergencies, call (214) 975-0480. For after-hours assistance, call (214) 975-0400. For garbage or recycling schedules, call (214) 975-0480.
  17. When is my water bill due? Payment is due on the 20th of each month (or the next business day if the 20th falls on a weekend) by 5 p.m. A 10% penalty applies the next business day after the due date, and a reminder with a cutoff deadline is sent.
