About Us
The information provided covers the 2017 season. Due to EPA monitoring protocols, certain contaminants are tested less frequently. In such cases, the most recent data available prior to 2017 is presented. Any detected contaminants will be noted.
Municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of certain contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Further information about contaminants and potential health effects is available through the USEPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791) or via their website at www.epa.state.il.us/water/.
To ensure tap water safety, USEPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. FDA regulations set similar standards for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.
The City of DeKalb Public Water System is a modern, state-of-the-art facility serving over 44,500 residents including Northern Illinois University. DeKalb's water comes from six deep wells drawing from sandstone aquifers and three shallow wells drawing from sand and gravel aquifers. These sources provide excellent water that's naturally low in contaminants.
Water undergoes treatment at one of five ion-exchange/iron removal plants. This process significantly reduces hardness and iron content. Before distribution, chlorine and phosphate are added to maintain system safety, and fluoride is included to promote dental health.
DeKalb's water undergoes comprehensive monitoring for microbiological, inorganic, organic, pesticide, herbicide, and radioactive contaminants. In 2017, more than 12,000 water analyses were conducted for over 100 different potential contaminants. For additional information about the DeKalb Water System, contact our office at (815) 748-2050 or visit www.cityofdekalb.com.
