GLEN ELLYN WATER SYSTEM OVERVIEW
Lake Michigan, a surface water source, supplies water to Chicago and over 120 suburban communities. The Great Lakes system represents 21% of the world's freshwater supply. Glen Ellyn receives water through the DuPage Water Commission (DWC), which purchases Lake Michigan water from Chicago.
Before reaching DWC, lake water undergoes treatment at Chicago's Jardine Purification Plant. After treatment, water travels to DWC metering stations and then to Glen Ellyn's distribution system, which includes:
- Approximately 110 miles of water main
- 1,600 valves
- 1,400 fire hydrants
- Two one-million gallon reservoirs
- Two elevated storage tanks with 1.25 million gallons combined capacity
- Two standby groundwater wells
In 2016, our average daily pumpage was 2.29 million gallons, totaling 837.23 million gallons for the year—approximately 83.5 gallons per day per resident.
Glen Ellyn delivers high-quality water through continuous monitoring at all receiving stations. Village staff, certified as IEPA Public Water Operators, collect samples throughout the town for independent laboratory analysis. These samples undergo testing for microbiological contaminants and Volatile Organic Compounds as required by federal and state regulations.
SOURCE WATER INFORMATION
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or through ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.

For more information on your tap water, visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency:
Glen Ellyn Municipal Water Company and EPAGlen Ellyn Municipal Water Report Information
The EPA requires all public water systems to monitor for specific contaminants and report findings to ensure compliance with drinking water standards. These standards are designed to protect public health by limiting contaminant levels in water.
Glen Ellyn monitors water quality daily, focusing on both regulated contaminants and aesthetic properties like hardness and mineral content that affect household plumbing and appliances.
Contaminants that may be present in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants (bacteria, viruses, parasites)
- Inorganic compounds (salts, metals)
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Organic chemicals from industrial processes
- Radioactive materials (naturally occurring or from production activities)
Regular testing ensures our compliance with all applicable regulations and helps identify potential treatment needs before they become problematic.
