About Us
The Village of Lombard assures residents that their municipal water is safe for consumption and exceeds all Federal and Illinois EPA standards. For ongoing quality assurance, Lombard has implemented voluntary water sampling programs, with independent results available on the village website.
Like all public distribution systems, Lombard must test for lead every three years. The most recent sampling from 2014 showed either non-detectable lead levels or measurements well below EPA Action Levels. The village receives pre-treated water from Chicago via the DuPage Water Commission, adding only minimal chlorine to maintain proper disinfection levels.
To prevent lead leaching from older service lines or plumbing fixtures, Chicago treats water with polyphosphate additives that create a protective coating inside pipes. This coating remains intact from treatment plant to household unless disrupted during construction or repairs.
Residents can minimize potential lead exposure by:
- Running cold water taps for several minutes after periods of non-use (6+ hours)
- Replacing older water service lines
- Upgrading older fixtures with lead-free WaterSense alternatives
- Installing water filters certified to remove lead
Lombard Public Works is committed to providing the highest quality water and educating residents about reducing exposure to potential contaminants.
