North Lake Municipal Water Company and EPANorth Lake Municipal Water Report Information
The City of Northlake developed along Addison Creek and was incorporated on July 19, 1949, with an initial population of 3,000. The name "Northlake" originated from the city's main thoroughfares—North Avenue and Lake Street—which intersect at a 45-degree angle on the western edge of the city. According to the 2010 census, the population has grown to 12,375.
1950s Development
In 1950, the first city code was established, prohibiting residents from keeping chickens within city limits. During this era, soggy farmland began developing amid post-World War II economic growth. The municipal government was established, boundaries were defined, and Eldon Hayes was elected as the first Mayor in 1949. Infrastructure improvements included sanitary sewers and a three-million-gallon water reservoir. High School District 212 built West Leyden High School on Wolf Road in 1958, eliminating the need for Northlake children to commute to Franklin Park.
Industries such as Scholle Chemical and Automatic Electric purchased land on the city's western perimeter. Automatic Electric occupied part of the former Westward Ho Golf Course, which was considered one of the nation's premier golfing destinations until it ceased operations in 1957. Another portion of the golf course was sold to Villa Scalabrini Home for the Aged, which is situated on what was once the fourth hole.
