This report provides an overview of the water quality provided to residents throughout the 2017 calendar year and offers detailed information about what your water contains and how it compares to regulatory standards set by Federal and State agencies.

The City of West Chicago remains dedicated to maintaining and enhancing water treatment and distribution infrastructure. To ensure this commitment, we conduct regular testing of your tap water in accordance with USEPA and IEPA health standards. Our water treatment facility, now in its thirteenth year of operation, continues to meet all USEPA drinking water quality requirements.

Distribution System Improvements:

In addition to delivering high-quality water, we maintain ongoing programs to rehabilitate wells and replace aging water mains, services, and related equipment. Well #12 was completed and began service in late 2017, while Well #9 was repaired and returned to operation during the same year. Our teams promptly identify and repair water leaks, while our valve maintenance program minimizes service interruptions and our hydrant maintenance program ensures reliable fire protection.

The West Chicago Public Works Department welcomed Rocky Horvath as the new Utility Superintendent in December 2017. With his extensive knowledge and experience, Rocky strengthens our commitment to providing our community with current and future infrastructure improvements that meet the highest standards while ensuring sound fiscal decisions. These efforts guarantee our customers reliable, safe drinking water for years to come.

If you have questions, please attend a regularly scheduled City Council Meeting. The Council meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 475 Main Street, West Chicago.

West Chicago Municipal Water Report Information

As part of efforts to attract industry, the community changed its name in 1896 to the Village of West Chicago. Local officials, particularly Charles Bolles, believed the new name sounded more metropolitan and would help locate the town for prospective factory owners. During this period, the Village also constructed a waterworks system to reduce fire hazards.

Several manufacturing facilities like Turner Brick Company, Stimmel and Hook Pump Works, and Roach and Brandt Millwork established operations in West Chicago despite economic challenges during the 1890s. As industrial development created new employment opportunities, the population increased substantially—reaching 1,877 by 1900 and growing to 2,378 residents by 1910.

In 1906, the town reincorporated as the City of West Chicago, with banker Grant A. Dayton serving as its first mayor. By 1909, the Aurora, Elgin and Chicago Railway (later known as the CA&E) added another rail connection to West Chicago. This electric interurban line developed commuter subdivisions along its route to generate passenger traffic, with High Lake just east of downtown being one such streetcar suburb. While High Lake remains a subdivision of West Chicago today, both the lake itself and the original clubhouse no longer exist.

The Chicago & Northwestern Railway built a new passenger terminal in 1912 (now the Wayne and Helen Fox Community Center at 306 Main Street), along with an underpass and the Wilson Street bridge spanning its mainline. The railway relocated its 1869 depot across Washington Street, converting it to a freight station. This historic 1869 structure still stands today at 119 W. Washington Street.
