About Us
This report outlines the quality of water provided during 2017, including details about water sources, content analysis, and comparison with regulatory standards. We believe informed residents are essential partners in water quality management.
Water Source and Treatment: River Grove purchases water from the City of Chicago through the Belmont Method interconnection. This water flows into our underground reservoir before being pumped into the distribution system. The City of Chicago manages primary water treatment, while River Grove adds supplemental chlorine to maintain quality standards.
Quality Monitoring: The Village conducts daily chlorine level tests to meet Illinois Environmental Protection Agency requirements. Additional testing includes monthly bacteriological samples, lead testing (passed in 2017), quarterly Haloacetic Acid and Trichalomethane monitoring, biweekly entry point sampling, and quarterly water quality assessments.
Public Engagement: For questions about this report or our water system, please contact John Bjorvik, Water Superintendent, at 708-452-7055. Residents are welcome to attend Village Board meetings held at 7:00 p.m. on the first and third Thursday monthly at Village Hall, 2621 Thatcher Avenue.
Health Information: Elevated lead levels can pose serious health risks, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in municipal water primarily comes from service lines and household plumbing components. To reduce potential exposure, flush your tap for 30-120 seconds after water has been sitting for several hours. Lead testing information is available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
Immunocompromised individuals, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly persons, and infants may be particularly vulnerable to certain contaminants. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding water consumption.
Water Quality Facts: All water sources—tap and bottled—may contain small amounts of contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the USEPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
Water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
