Why is my water discolored?

The most frequent cause of discoloration is sudden changes in water flow within your service area. Pressure changes, flow adjustments, or directional shifts in nearby water mains can stir up sediment and rust particles, causing reddish or brownish water. Pressure fluctuations may also introduce air bubbles into water lines, creating a milky appearance from your tap. These changes typically result from hydrant flushing/testing or valve adjustments during pipe maintenance. The discoloration should resolve within hours, though flushing your household plumbing might help. Despite appearances, the water remains safe to consume. If problems persist beyond a day, please contact our main office.

Why does my water smell/taste unusual?

Here are the most commonly reported taste/odor concerns:

  • Chlorine or pool smell – This comes directly from chlorine added to disinfect your water by eliminating harmful bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. Chlorine concentrations vary throughout the system but typically range from 0.2-1.8 parts per million (significantly lower than pool water), the minimum needed for water safety. Chlorine odors are often more noticeable during warmer months, in hot water (especially showers), and mornings when water has warmed in household plumbing overnight.
  • Metallic Taste - May originate from natural elements in source water and is commonly reported by new residents accustomed to water from different regions. Water can acquire tastes from new pipes or areas with low usage.
  • Septic/sewer odors - Odors from dirty sink drains may be mistakenly attributed to water quality. Try drinking water away from the sink to determine the actual source.
  • Rubber or Plastic Taste – Most commonly reported during summer, usually resulting from garden hoses attached to outdoor faucets. As hoses heat up, they impart unpleasant odors into the water.

How do I know my water is safe to drink?

Our top priority is providing clean, safe water that meets or exceeds state regulatory standards. Water quality is continuously monitored at our treatment facilities, and representative samples are regularly tested throughout our distribution system. Our annual Consumer Confidence Report summarizes all testing results. Beyond safety, we strive to deliver aesthetically pleasing water with consistent pressure and flow to your home.
