About Us
According to a Well Site Study published in 1989 by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, twenty-eight potential contamination sources were identified within Huntley's well vicinity. Additionally, the Leaking Underground Storage Tank Section of the Illinois EPA revealed several sites undergoing remediation that warrant monitoring.
The Illinois EPA has determined that Huntley's Community Water Supply source is not susceptible to contamination. This assessment is based on comprehensive well monitoring, distribution point testing, and available hydrogeologic data. In preparation for the EPA's proposed Ground Water Rule, Illinois EPA confirmed that Huntley is not vulnerable to viral contamination, following thorough Vulnerability Waiver Process analysis.
For protection, the Illinois Environmental Protection Act provides minimum safety zones of 200 feet around Huntley's wells. The village has also enacted a "maximum setback zone ordinance" for well #7, permitting additional safeguards up to 1,000 feet from wells. The community has implemented a wellhead protection program, including proper abandonment of potential contamination routes and correction of sanitary defects at the treatment facility.
These protective efforts earned the facility a special exemption permit from Illinois EPA, reducing required monitoring and saving significant laboratory testing costs. The Illinois EPA recommends three additional protective measures: establishing "maximum setback zone" ordinances for wells #8, #9, #10, and #11; reviewing contingency planning documents; and maintaining a current cross-connection control program to prevent contamination from external sources.
