This year, just as in previous years, your tap water underwent rigorous testing based on USEPA and state health standards. Our system diligently protects its Lake Michigan water supply, and we're constantly working to deliver the highest quality water possible. This report highlights the quality of water we provided last year and informs you about any issues we're addressing.

The report includes details about your water source, its composition, and how it measures against standards set by regulatory agencies. We encourage our valued customers to stay informed about their water quality. Additional information is available at Village Board meetings with the President and Board of Trustees, held on the first and third Thursday monthly at the Municipal Building (2121 Lake Street, Room 214) at 7:30 pm. All meetings are open to the public.

Hanover Park utilizes groundwater from four wells drilled into the Cambrian Ordovician and Illinois Prairie aquifers as an emergency supply. These wells provided only 0.5% of the Village's total water consumption in 2016. Lake Michigan was the source for 99.5% of our water supply. The City of Chicago provides treatment for the Village's Lake Michigan water.

Sources of Water:
Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and groundwater wells. Lake Michigan is our surface water supply. As water travels across land or through ground, it can pick up substances from human activity or animal presence. Our water source may be affected by industrial waste and runoff from surrounding areas.

Potential contaminants include:

• Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharges, or agricultural activities
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential use
• Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
• Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. People with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, those with HIV/AIDS, elderly persons, and infants—should seek advice from healthcare providers about drinking water.

All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Frequently Asked Questions

How is our municipal water tested?
The Utility Department monitors for over 130 regulated and unregulated contaminants from our water sources. The monitoring results in this document are from recent testing. If a known health-related contaminant isn't listed in this report, it wasn't detected in our municipal water.

Does our city add fluoride to the municipal water?
No. Our water utility does not add fluoride to the water supply. Fluoride is a naturally occurring trace element in surface and groundwater. You may want to consult with your dentist about fluoride treatments for preventing tooth decay.

Is our water hard or soft?
Typically, our water sources have a hardness level ranging from about 0.99 to 1.46 grains of hardness per gallon. This places our water in the "soft" to "slightly hard" range according to classifications from the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Water Quality Association.
