Boston Water and Sewer Commission (MWRA) Municipal Water Report Info

The Boston Water and Sewer Commission (BWSC) operates New England's largest and oldest utility system of its kind, delivering municipal water and sewer services to over one million residents daily. Established by Massachusetts Legislature in 1977, BWSC replaced the previous water and sewer divisions within Boston's Public Works Department.

BWSC is governed by a three-member Board of Commissioners appointed by the Mayor with City Council approval. Their primary mission is providing Boston residents and businesses with high-quality water and sewer services that protect the environment while remaining cost-effective.

For more than four decades, BWSC has consistently delivered quality potable water and efficient sanitary services to its million-plus daily users, maintaining financial integrity while promoting public health. The Commission's infrastructure stems from an extensive water and sewer history in Boston dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries.
