Massachusetts Water Utility Companies

Quality First: We are pleased to present our annual municipal water quality report. As in previous years, our company remains dedicated to delivering the highest quality water possible. We continue to be vigilant in meeting regulatory requirements, protecting water sources, promoting conservation, and conducting community outreach while meeting the needs of all our customers. Thank you for allowing us to serve you.

Source Water Assessment: The Source Water Assessment and Protection (SWAP) Program established under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act requires every state to inventory land uses within public water source recharge areas, assess contamination vulnerability, and publish findings to improve safety. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection completed this assessment for Mansfield on February 27, 2003, with modifications to the Canoe River area in 2013. Reports are available at the Mansfield Water Division office.

Health Information: Certain populations may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general public. People with compromised immune systems (cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, those with HIV/AIDS), some elderly individuals, and infants may face higher risks. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption. The EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing Cryptosporidium infection risk are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

Professional Expertise: Delivering high-quality water involves complex processes managed by certified professionals. Our water specialists receive extensive training in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics to perform crucial tasks including:

  • Operating and maintaining purification equipment
  • Monitoring instrumentation and conditions
  • Conducting regular testing and analysis
  • Maintaining optimal water chemistry
  • Processing data to determine treatment requirements
  • Documenting results for regulatory compliance
  • Providing community education and support

Lead Awareness: If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health concerns, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically enters drinking water through service lines and home plumbing materials. While we provide high-quality water, we cannot control the components used in household plumbing systems.

Mansfield Water Division Municipal Water Report Information

History of Mansfield: The Town of Mansfield was established in 1775 as part of Massachusetts' rich historical legacy. The community offers excellent educational systems and exceptional environmental quality.

Historical Overview: Mansfield officially marked 150 years since its incorporation by the Provincial Congress of Massachusetts on August 23, 1925. Five years earlier, in 1770, it had been incorporated as a separate district and named after William Murray, Earl of Mansfield from Nottinghamshire, England.

Early Settlement: The first recorded visit by Europeans was on June 19, 1640, when Captain Miles Standish, accompanied by John Brown and others, surveyed land known as the Titiquet Purchase. This area covered approximately sixty-four square miles, with its northern point located on the Fisher property near what is now Willow Street, referred to in old deeds as "Cobbler's Corner."

Expansion and Development: On June 6, 1668, another land acquisition known as the Taunton North Purchase expanded the territory to include what would become Mansfield, Norton and Easton. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1685, with Thomas Brintnell establishing residence near the Foxboro line and John Caswell in the eastern section.

Community Founders: Notable early residents included Nicholas White (local statesman), Thomas Skinner (first schoolmaster), and Ephraim Leonard (businessman). Nicholas White became particularly influential when he and George Leonard petitioned for separation from Taunton. After a lengthy campaign from 1707 to 1711, Norton (which then included Mansfield) became an independent town.
