Athens is proud to present our 2017 Annual Municipal Water Quality Report. Our mission is to meet the water needs of our community by delivering the highest quality water available. We encourage public involvement through attending public meetings, calling us at 903-675-5131, emailing utilities@athenstx.gov, or visiting www.athenstx.gov. For specific water quality inquiries, please call 903-675-6667.

Our Municipal Water Meets All Federal EPA Requirements

This report provides an overview of water quality based on the most recent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) required testing. We hope this information helps you become more knowledgeable about what's in your municipal water.

Where Does Our Water Come From?

The City of Athens (PWS #1070005) distributed 736,541,000 gallons of water during 2017. The Athens Municipal Water Authority (AMWA) (PWS #1070252) supplied 296,194,000 gallons of treated surface water and 237,747,000 gallons of groundwater. An additional 202,600,500 gallons of groundwater came from wells operated by the City of Athens. Water loss, including unmetered usage, totaled 141,639,405 gallons for 2017.

Athens water includes surface water from Lake Athens and groundwater from local wells. The TCEQ Source Water Assessment report describes potential contaminant sources based on human activities and natural conditions. For more information about these assessments, please call 903-677-6666.

Secondary Constituents and Water Quality

Elements like calcium, sodium, and iron may affect taste, color, and odor of water. Texas regulates these secondary constituents but doesn't consider them health concerns. When water meets federal standards, there may be no health benefits to purchasing bottled water or using filtration devices.

All water, including bottled water, contains some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.

Cryptosporidium Monitoring

This microscopic intestinal parasite occurs naturally in the environment. While filtration removes most Cryptosporidium, no filtration method guarantees 100% removal. Athens regularly tests treated and untreated water samples, and no Cryptosporidium was detected during 2017. People with healthy immune systems typically recover within weeks, but immunocompromised individuals face greater risks. If you're in a high-risk group, consult your doctor about appropriate precautions.

Lead in Drinking Water

Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically enters drinking water from service lines and home plumbing materials. While we provide high-quality water, we can't control the materials used in plumbing components. You can minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If concerned, you may wish to have your water tested. Information about lead in drinking water is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Community Partnership: Historic Cemetery Restoration

The City of Athens and Henderson County Precincts 2, 3, and 4 recently formed a partnership to restore the historic Fisher-Robinson cemetery. County Commissioners allocated labor and equipment to clear debris from this significant historical site located off Robbins Road.

The City of Athens supported these efforts by providing access to the City's Collection Site for debris disposal. "This partnership has significantly accelerated the restoration process," noted Henderson County Precinct 4 Commissioner Ken Geeslin. "We also thank Athens Independent School District for allowing access through their property to avoid traffic disruption on Robbins Road."

"This restoration represents an important moment for our community," said City of Athens Community Services Coordinator Adrianna Hinds. "Members of the Henderson County Historical Commission have researched this Black historical cemetery for decades, working toward placement of a state historical marker. Clearing the land makes this important heritage site visible to our community residents."

Future plans include honoring this historic property's legacy through designation as a Texas State Historical Landmark. For more information about this restoration project, contact City Hall at 903-675-5131 or email info@athenstx.gov.
