Originally, this area was pristine prairie—hunting grounds for Karankawa Indian tribes and winter feeding grounds for vast herds of buffalo, wild ducks, geese, sandhill cranes, whooping cranes, and numerous other wildlife. The region also supported longhorn cattle, deer, and wolves in its natural state.
The earliest settlement of what became known as Cane Island (named for Cane Island Creek that flows through the area) occurred in 1872. The townsite of Katy was formally laid out and platted by J.O. Thomas, L.C. Luckel, and R.M. Cash in 1895, apparently named after the M-K-T Railroad that passed through the settlement.
A post office opened in 1896, and despite the devastating hurricane of 1900 that destroyed Galveston and most of Katy's buildings, the community rebuilt and continued to grow. Churches were established and a school was constructed. While rice farming became the primary industry, peanuts and cotton were also important crops. Katy Independent School District formed in 1918, and a significant gas field was discovered in 1934, beginning an industry that remains vital to the city today.
The City of Katy was officially incorporated in 1945. Throughout its history, Katy has maintained its traditional, family-oriented community character while continuing to offer residents small-town charm. Historical homes in Katy were documented and marked by the local Texas Sesquicentennial Committee in 1986, creating walking and driving tour routes featuring more than a dozen historical homes and buildings in downtown Katy.
