Texas Water Utility Companies

The City of Anna is pleased to share this water quality report with our residents. We strive to provide you with reliable information about your municipal water supply. Our water meets or exceeds all Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations for municipal water.

If present, elevated lead levels can pose serious health concerns, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water primarily comes from materials in service lines and household plumbing. While we provide quality water, we cannot control the components used in your home's plumbing. You can minimize potential lead exposure by running your faucet for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption. If concerned about lead, consider having your water tested. More information is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Water Sources:
The City of Anna receives water from both ground (approximately 60%) and surface (approximately 40%) sources. Our groundwater comes from seven deep wells owned and operated by the City. Our treated surface water is purchased from Greater Texoma Utility Authority (GTUA) through an agreement with North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD), which sources from Lavon Lake, Lake Texoma, Lake Tawakoni and Jim Chapman Lake.

Potential Contaminants:

  • Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment, septic systems, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from natural sources, urban runoff, or industrial processes
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes and petroleum production
  • Radioactive contaminants that can occur naturally or result from mining activities

The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while the FDA sets similar standards for bottled water. Both aim to provide equal public health protection.

Some substances in water may affect taste, odor, or color without necessarily posing health risks. For questions about water quality characteristics, please contact Troy Hopkins at (972) 924-4510.

Source Water Assessment:
The TCEQ has completed an assessment of our source water, indicating some sources may be susceptible to certain contaminants. For more information on source water assessments and protection efforts, contact Troy Hopkins at (972) 924-4510 or visit http://www.tceq.texas.gov/gis/swaview.

City of Anna Municipal Water Report Info

Anna is situated along State Highway 5, Farm Road 455, and U.S Highway 75, approximately eleven miles northeast of McKinney in north central Collin County. While Collin McKinney established a settlement within a few miles of the future townsite in 1846, John L. Greer is recognized as the founder who built the first residence and commercial establishment upon his arrival in 1867.

The Houston and Texas Central Railway constructed a line through the region in 1873, connecting Dallas and Denison. By the time Anna was officially platted in 1883, the community had grown to include twenty residents, several merchants, a steam-powered gristmill, and a Baptist church. That same year, a post office was established to serve the growing settlement.

By 1890, Anna's population had expanded to between 100-200 residents. The town formally incorporated in 1913, with John L. Greer serving as its inaugural mayor. Local historian Chester A. Howell documented Anna's history for inclusion in a publication distributed at the Anna school homecoming on October 19, 1985. A supplementary "errata" page correcting minor inaccuracies was added in 1989. Mr. Howell's comprehensive work, "A Town Named Anna" (PDF), remains one of the most authoritative accounts of our community's development.
